Agra Fort
This majestic fort is a must visit in excursions from Taj Mahal, Agra. Emperor Akbar got the fort built in 1565 near Taj Mahal, to which several consequent emperors made additions. Agra Fort completely built of red sandstone leaves visitors in awe and is one of the major tourist attractions nearby to Taj Mahal.
Akbar's Tomb
Another of famous places to visit near Taj Mahal, Akbar's Tomb lies at Sikandra, which is about 4 km from Agra city. Interestingly, the tomb's architecture does not bear resemblance to the other tombs built in typical Mughal architectural style. It apparently seems to be a blend of various styles used to create the magnificent structure of Akbar's tomb.
Fatehpur Sikri
Also located near Agra city, Fatehpur Sikri is today abandoned yet a popular nearby attraction to Taj Mahal. The city was built under the reign of Akbar in 1584. During the time, Fatehpur Sikri proudly figured in the list of the "most majestic cities of the Mughal empire". Though in ruins today, the city hasn't lost its authentic charm and continues to attract tourists in large numbers.
Itmad-ud-Daulah Tomb
The famous tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah is among the most popular nearby attractions of Taj Mahal and a must visit in Agra excursions. The tomb was built by Noor Jehan, Emperor Jehangir's wife, during the early 17th century in the fond remembrance of her late father Ghiyas-ud-Din Beg. Itmad-ud-Daulah Tomb can well be compared to Taj Mahal owing to its exquisite carvings and inlay work.
Vrindavan
This famous pilgrimage site, located a few kilometers from Agra, also figures in the list of top places to visit near the Taj. Being the birthplace of Lord Krishna, the city is considered to be sacred and witnesses a huge influx of pilgrims throughout the year. Nearly 4000 temples dedicated to the Lord can be found at Vrindavan and each of them is as beautiful as the other and a must visit attraction near Taj Mahal, Agra.
